Delegates from Finland, China, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Australia, Canada and the UK recently attended the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester to undertake the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Snooker Coaching in order to be recognised as a WPBSA World Snooker Coach.

The course is delivered by the English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards, an umbrella organisation incorporating bodies including the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. Following its successful launch and first course held in May this year, this latest group took part in initial training covering the principles of coaching and how to deliver a series of coaching lessons led by Steve Davis, Andrew Highfield and Chris Lovell.

The group undertook three hours of safeguarding and child protection training delivered under the NSPCC guidelines by Chris Motley and achieved their certificate in safeguarding awarded by sports coach UK. Each person also completed an enhanced DBS check.

Course Structure

This new level 2 qualification sees participants begin by receiving four days of intensive training before progressing to use and develop their coaching skills in the filed with two players of a novice and intermediate level, in a practical environment. Coaches complete four linked lessons with each player following an initial assessment and must prove they have coached their pupil to increase their performance. Once they are happy that this level has been reached and they have completed other required tasks they return to an assessment day where they are assessed undertaking a lesson by a qualified assessor. Once they have completed a successful assessment and their portfolio of evidence has reached the required level they achieve the 1st4Sport Certificate in Snooker Coaching.

1st4Sport are an awarding body recognized by Ofqual and specialise in offering vocational and occupational qualifications in the active leisure learning and wellbeing sector covering over 50 sports including football, cricket, cycling, rugby league and union and tennis.
