World number 65 Alfie Burden has tonight made the first maximum break of his professional career during his opening round match against Daniel Wells at the Coral English Open.

The 147 break came during the sixth frame of the match to level the scoreline at 3-3 and is especially notable for not being only Burden’s maiden maximum, but also the 100th century break of his career to date.

The outcome would prove to be a bittersweet one for Burden as he would go on to lose the deciding-frame and exit the tournament, but he nevertheless remains in line to take the rolling 147 prize of £10,000, in addition to the £2,000 high break prize, provided that the break is not equalled during the remainder of the tournament.

The break was officiated by Tatiana Woollaston, who presided over a professional maximum for the first time in her career.
