Three days down at the 918.com German Masters and yesterday the battle for places in the top 16 after this cut-off took a twist as Stephen Maguire suffered a 5-1 exit at the hands of former world champion Graeme Dott.

The result means that Maguire will not regain a position inside the world’s top 16 after the tournament, but in Martin Gould (18), Kyren Wilson (19) and Dott (20), there are still three players who could yet climb as high as 15th position by winning the tournament tomorrow evening.

Following his third 5-4 victory of the week so far, Kyren Wilson is already now assured of a new career-high ranking after the tournament of at least 19th or 20th, depending on results this weekend.

Another set to climb to a new peak is Belgium’s Luca Brecel, who is currently set to rise to 33rd by reaching his second career semi-final. If he can get the better of Wilson today he will break into the top 32 in 28th position, while a breakthrough title would see him surge to as high as 20th position, again depending on Graeme Dott’s progress in the other half of the draw.
